Historic Background:
Sir Henry Raeburn (17561823) was a prominent Scottish portrait painter who became a leading figure in the Scottish Enlightenment's artistic scene. He was known for his ability to capture the personality of his subjects with a powerful and direct style. His subjects included many of the most important figures in Scottish society.
Alicia Stewart of Coltness was the daughter of William Blacker of Carrick, County Armagh. She married Sir James Stewart Denham, the last Baronet of Coltness. While there is no record of children from their marriage, her husband was a noted economist and Jacobite who, after living in exile, inherited the family estate and title. Raeburn's portrait of her is a famous work that captures the elegance and sophistication of the era.
The Army & Navy Cooperative Society was a highend British department store founded in 1871 to provide goods to army and navy officers and their families. Their "Fine Art Section" sold highquality prints and other works, making this piece a historic item from a wellknown British institution.
