This is a remarkable opportunity to acquire an authentic antique print from 1820, published in London, depicting Sir Thomas Strange Knight. This finely rendered engraving captures the likeness of a significant figure in British colonial law and history.

Historic Background

The print portrays Sir Thomas Andrew Lumisden Strange (17561841), a distinguished British jurist. Born in London, Strange had a notable career that spanned across continents. He served as the Chief Justice of Nova Scotia from 1789 to 1797, where he was celebrated for his efforts in freeing enslaved Black Nova Scotians. Following this, he was knighted in 1798 and appointed the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Madras (British India), a position he held from 1801 to 1817. During his time in India, he played a crucial role in establishing the judicial system and later authored a seminal twovolume text, "Elements of Hindu Law," which became a definitive work on the subject for many years. This print, published shortly after his return to England, commemorates a man whose legal contributions had a lasting impact on both colonial and international jurisprudence.
