Series: Little Goat Herder & Feeding Time Bookends (HUM 250 A&B)
Height: 5 inches
Width: 7 inches
First Modeled: 1960
Material: Porcelain with a wooden base
Condition: Good vintage condition. The figurines are wellpreserved with visible no chips or cracks. The wooden base shows minor wear consistent with age, as visible in the photos.
Features:
Collectible Value: These bookends are part of the Goebel M.I. Hummel collection, making them a valuable addition to any Hummel or figurine collection.
Design: Handpainted with exquisite detail, showcasing the classic Hummel style.
Origins: Produced in the 1960s, these pieces reflect the craftsmanship of the era.
Story of it:This piece is one half of a bookend set that was created by adapting the "Little Goat Herder" figurines (HUM 200) and mounting them onto a wooden base with a slatted fence that serves as a book rest. The identification marks and trademark are placed on the wooden base because the figurine's base is concealed. This modified version of the figurine first appeared around 1965 and was priced at $26.50 for the set, known as HUM 250 A&B. Typically, these bookends are found with trademark designs ranging from TMK3 to TMK6. However, there is a possibility of encountering an earlier TMK2 mark due to unique cases within Goebel's productions. Goebel marked these items as "temporarily withdrawn" (TW) from production on December 31, 1989, with no specified date for reinstatement. Historical records reveal that these bookends were crafted by a group of modelers in 1960 and were first made available in the U.S. market in 1964.

This exquisite vintage piece captures a tender moment in nature, depicting a vibrantly colored parent bird, likely a European Roller, tending to its three hungry chicks on a branch laden with delicate leaves and ripening berries. The craftsmanship is superb, showcasing the incredible detail and emotion for which Armani is renowned. The parent bird is beautifully handpainted with brilliant blues, warm reds, and iridescent greens, while the fledgling chicks are rendered with charming realism, their beaks wide open in anticipation. The entire scene is set upon a classic white oval base, which bears the artist's incised signature. This is a substantial and impressive piece that would be a standout addition to any collection of fine European porcelain or a magnificent decorative accent for your home.Historical BackgroundGiuseppe Armani was a master sculptor born in Calci, Italy, in 1935. From a young age, he was recognized as a gifted artist. He honed his skills at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and became famous for his sculptures in the Capodimonte style—a tradition of highly detailed porcelain artistry that originated in Naples in the 18th century. Armani's work is celebrated worldwide for its incredible realism, lifelike detail, and the sense of movement and emotion he was able to capture in his creations. This piece is a wonderful example of his legacy.ConditionOverall, this figurine is in excellent vintage condition, displaying beautifully. As a delicate, handmade piece of this age, there are a few minor imperfections to note. We have done our best to photograph these clearly:
There appear to be a few tiny "flea bites" or small chips on the delicate edges of some leaves and berries (please see closeup photos where a finger is pointing for reference).
There may be a small area of roughness or a tiny chip on the foot/talon of one of the chicks.
The original paper label on the underside is partially torn.
There are no major cracks, breaks, repairs, or crazing to the main body of the sculpture.
Please examine all photographs carefully as they are an integral part of this description. The piece presents wonderfully and these minor points do not detract from its overall beauty.Details & Markings:
